ABSTRACT
The maximum power that can be obtained from photovoltaic (PV) modules varies depending on climatic and environmental conditions. Moreover, P-V characteristic curves with multiple maximum power points (MPP) can be seen in partially shaded PV arrays. Despite its variable nature and local MPP traps, obtaining maximum power from a PV array is possible with maximum power point trackers (MPPT). MPPT devices are essentially DC-DC converters controlled by MPPT methods. Since MPPT methods have their own advantages and disadvantages, the development of superior MPPT method continues.
In this study, a new hybrid MPPT method is proposed for PV systems that able to detect and track the global MPP under partial shading conditions. The proposed MPPT method is based on the Bat algorithm (BA) and Incremental Conductance (INC)
algorithm. Banned BA has been developed by adding the baning ability to the standard BA that adapted according to the MPPT process. In the proposed MPPT method, the global MPP peak is determined by running Banned BA first. Then MPP is tracked more sensitively by running the INC algorithm. When a relatively large change in the power occurs, the Banned BA will be run again. Otherwise, the INC algorithm continues to run.
The proposed MPPT method simulations are made on the PV system model prepared in MATLAB/Simulink. The proposed MPPT method simulation results were compared with Perturb and Observe (P&O) algorithm, INC algorithm and standard BA simulation results. Also, an experimental PV system was set up to see the actual performance of the proposed MPPT method. MPPT codes were written for TMS320F28379D microcontroller with Code Composer Studio. A PV array that is series configured was installed with 3 PV modules of 60 Wp and a non-inverting Buck-Boost DC-DC converter circuit was made. Simulation and experimental results show that the proposed MPPT method is successful in all conditions including partial shading, and is superior to P&O, INC and standard BA MPPT methods.
