Abstract:
ABSTRACT
This research was performed in a descriptive and cross-sectional manner in order to examine the anxiety levels of children, who are hospitalized in pediatric and infant wards due to cases of acute and chronic diseases, and their parents. The research was conducted with a total of 225 children and 225 parents. In collecting the data, "Participant Questionnaire" and "Anxiety Sensitivity Index For Children" was employed, while "Beck Anxiety Inventory", which is used for adult individuals, was applied for the parents. The data was transferred to IBM SPSS Statistics 23 software program. The data was evaluated in terms of numbers, percentages, means, and standard deviation. Mann Whitney U, Kruskal Wallis, Spearman correlation tests were used to analyze the data. The results were evaluated at 95% confidence interval and a p value of <0.05 was considered to be significant. In the research, the anxiety sensitivity index mean score for children determined to be 35.70 ± 4.94, while the beck anxiety inventory mean score was ascertained to be 21.35 ± 6.16. It was established that 75.1% of the children participating in the research were hospitalized due to acute illnesses and 24.9% due to chronic illnesses. There was no statistically significant difference between the anxiety levels of children diagnosed with acute illnesses and the anxiety levels of children diagnosed with chronic illness (p> 0.05). It was determined that the anxiety levels of girls were significantly higher than boys. Moreover, the level of anxiety of the parents of children hospitalized with a diagnosis of acute disease was found to be significantly different from the parents of children hospitalized with a diagnosis of chronic disease (p <0.005). A statistically significant difference was found between the education levels of the parents and their anxiety levels. In line with the results obtained from the research, a positive significant difference was determined between the anxiety sensitivity index for children and beck anxiety inventory
