ABSTRACT
In this study, it was aimed to predict gender using machine learning algorithms on computed tomography images of the 1st, 11th and 12th thoracic vertebrae.
Computed tomography images of individuals who applied to Karabuk University Training and Research Hospital between 2015 and 2020 with various health problems were scanned retrospectively. 100 (50F, 50M) individuals aged 25-50 years without any fracture, pathology or surgical intervention in their thoracic vertebrae were included in the study. The images transferred to the Horos program were brought to the orthogonal plane using the Multiplanar Reconstruction (MPR) tool in three planes (coronal, sagittal, transverse). On the images brought to the orthogonal plane with reference to the vertebral body and spinous process, 15 parameters of the T1, T11 and T12 vertebrae were measured using the measurement tool: (1) length of the spinous process (lePCS), (2) the farthest distance between spinous process and vertebral body
(total length of the vertebrae) (leVRT), (3) length of the vertebral body (heCV), (4) width of the vertebral body (genCV), (5) length between spinous process and right transverse process (PCS-PTD), (6) length between spinous process and left transverse process (PCS-PTS), (7) distance between left and right transverse process (PTD-PTS),
(8) angle between right transverse process, spinous process and left transverse process (angPCS-PT), (9) anteroposterior diameter of vertebral foramen (capFV), (10) transverse diameter of vertebral foramen (ctrFV), (11) width of right superior articular facet (leFAD), (12) width of left superior articular facet (leFAS), (13) longest distance between right and left articular process (PAD-PAS), (14) length of right pedicle (lePD), (15) length of left pedicle (lePS) were measured. Machine learning algorithms were implemented using the Sekazu program. Minitab 17 package program was used for basic statistical analysis. According to the results of the analysis, the age of men was calculated as 36.50±8.26, and the age of women as 40.26±7.63. For all three vertebrae, the measured length values in males were higher than in females. Parameters of lePCS, leVRT, heCV, genCV, PCS-PTD, PCS-PTS, PTD-PTS, angPCS-PT, capFV, ctrFV, lePD, lePS for T1 vertebrae; parameters of lePCS, leVRT, heCV, genCV, PCS-PTD, PCS-PTS, PTD-PTS, ctrFV, leFAD, leFAS, PAD-PAS, lePD, lePS for T11 vertebrae; for T12 vertebrae, a significant difference was found according to gender in the parameters of lePCS, leVRT, heCV, genCV, PCS-PTD, PCS-PTS, PTD- PTS, ctrFV, PAD-PAS, lePD, lePS (p<0,05). According to the analysis results of machine learning algorithms, an accuracy rate varying between 0.89-0.95 was obtained.
As a result of this study; the gender prediction success of T1, T11, T12 vertebrae using machine learning algorithms is between 0.89-0.95, and it has been shown that these vertebrae are suitable for use in sex prediction. |
