The analysis of conjunctions in the hard and soft domains of Scopus Index Journals using the Functional Theory

Abstract

ABSTRACT Conjunctions are one of the significant cohesive devices for relating words, clauses, groups, and paragraphs as well as adjusting the meanings of a text. Despite the fact of an excessive number of studies indicating the importance of the current issue (conjunctions), limited studies utilized the Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) in analyzing the use of conjunctions within the text. The present study explored the role of conjunctions utilized in the hard domain published articles like chemistry, mathematics, medicine, and physics, as well as the soft domain published articles like education, linguistics, philosophy, and social science. A corpus is comprised of 80 articles (published in the years 2017 to 2021) gathered from the distinguishable website Scientific Journal Rankings (SJR) taking Halliday’s (2014) taxonomy of cohesion model base for the current study to be analyzed qualitatively. The findings showed that conjunctions especially extending and elaborating conjunctions are used in the soft domains research articles more frequently than what is found in the hard domain articles, whereas the enhancing conjunctions tend to be utilized in the hard domain articles bigger than the articles belong to the soft domain. Besides, in bulk, Education research articles came in the first rank in using conjunctions in comparison to other soft domain systems. As for the hard domain, the research articles that belonged to Medicine recorded identified superiority by using conjunctions, in general, over the other hard domain disciplines. The findings of the current study can be useful to the researchers, teachers, and students.
