ABSTRACT
After the illustrated manuscripts, which were the dominant genre of Ottoman painting for centuries, murals, which started to be seen on the walls of buildings from the 18th century, spread to all parts of the empire in the 19th century. This new understanding, which blends the Baroque, Rococo and imperial styles of Europe with the Ottoman interpretation, has been applied to civilian structures in the capital, and to both civilian and religious structures in the upstate. The murals, which usually take their subjects from landscape, still life and symbolic imagery, have varied over time. One of them is architectural imageries. This type of imagery is sometimes included in a landscape, and sometimes it is portray alone. Architectural descriptions, the first examples of which we began to see in the Topkapı Palace during the reign of Abdulhamid I (1774-1789), were generally composed of mansions and pavilions of İstanbul, while structures symbolizing the capital İstanbul were depicted in wall paintins, which were seen later especially in provincial provinces.
Defense and civil structure imageries have an important place in architectural imageries. Castle, fortress, citiy wall and barracks defense structures, houses, palaces, pavilions, waterside residences and mansions ıt has been observed that civil structures have formed. These are sometimes made schematically and sometimes in a way that reflects reality. Some of the imageries were limited to Baroque and Rococo decorations, and some were applied directly to the walls of the building. In the murals, mostly imageries affecting the silhouette of Istanbul were seen, but there were also imageries of the city where the building is located or the structures around it.
The effects of the modernization and westernization movements followed by the Ottoman Empire were reflected in the application of these imageries to the capital and upstate buildings in the 18th and 19th centuries. Thus, the Ottoman Empire aimed to show this change to the whole world. |
