ABSTRACT
In this study, in order to eliminate the data gaps on the wear behavior of the train wheels produced in Turkey, the wear behavior of the ER 7 quality materials used in the railway wheels was investigated by applying different heat treatment and load conditions. The samples cut from the wheel were divided into 3 groups. Heat treatment was not applied to the first group, the second group was heated in the furnace at 900 °C for 60 seconds, and the third group was heated at 900 °C for 1 hour and hardened for 120 seconds. The samples were subjected to abrasion test by applying 20 N and 40 N loads on the ring with the block method, and the amount of wear was determined by measuring the weight loss. Microstructure examinations of the samples were taken with an optical microscope and SEM device. Brinell hardness measurements were carried out using 5mm steel balls under a load of 750 kgf.
The hardness increased from approximately 250 HB to 550 HB with the 60 sec and 120 sec hardening process applied to the examined train wheel samples. While the microstructure of the original wheel had a fine pearlitic structure containing grain boundary ferrite, it was transformed into bainitic and martensitic structure by quenching. With the increase of the hardening time of the samples after the wear test, approximately 96% decrease in wear loss was observed. After the wear tests, the sem examination of the surfaces taken, decreased the wear loss, and the transformation of the wear mechanism from groove and excessive plastic deformation to flat surface wear was exhibited.
