Abstract:
ABSTRACT
The path followed by the Ottoman Empire in architecture and art since its foundation years has created the Ottoman art that will last for centuries. The Ottoman Empire, which aimed to dominate the world with the ideology of proving its existence and power in the lands it conquered while still a principality, was in political, social and economic interaction with Byzantium, the closest state to its lands. The same kind of political and cultural interaction was experienced with the Mamluks, the powerful state of the period in the Eastern Mediterranean. Interaction with Mamluk art in architecture was limited to decoration techniques and architectural details. The political relations with the Mamluks were not as great as the interaction with the Byzantine, which was a border neighbor in cultural influence.
After the collapse of the Anatolian Seljuks, the Ottomans saw themselves as the heir of the Seljuk State and the heir of the Byzantine lands they conquered. The idea that the Ottomans were seen as the heirs of the Seljuk or Byzantine Empire has also been a subject discussed by local and foreign researchers. Not only is it acceptable for Turkish researchers to ignore the culture that has existed in the lands of a Christian state captured by the Ottomans from the past and to make it felt in their own culture and art, but there were also researchers who did not accept the art of the Byzantine Empire in Ottoman architecture and art. The views of foreign researchers that Ottoman architecture is the continuation of Byzantine art were not accepted by local researchers.
In the study, while the effects and synthesis of Byzantine, Seljuk and Mamluk influences in the early phase of the Ottoman Empire were mentioned, it was focused on the facts that can be discussed by including the opinions of various researchers. As a result, in the aim of this thesis, the monumental structures, where the synthesis between the structures is considered, together with the discussions in all their details, have been tried to be gathered in a single research.
