ABSTRACT
The South Caucasus is one of the most strategically important regions of the world. Due to its location on the migration routes, it remained under the domination of many great states such as Roman, Byzantine, Arab, Mongolian, Ottoman, Tsarist Russia and the USSR. For this reason, the region is an important center that hosts peoples of different ethnicities and different religions.
The South Caucasus has been the battleground of the great powers and in this context, the region has been worn out. However, the desire for independence was constantly found in the peoples of the region, and they gained their independence after the collapse of the USSR. After the countries of the region gained their independence, an atmosphere of turmoil occurred due to various ethnic differences and the peoples were dragged into ethnic conflicts. The peoples of the region wanted to continue to protect their cultural, religious and nationalist ideas.
The dissolution of the Soviet Union has become a turning point both for the world and for the countries of the region. Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia, the three countries that gained their independence, have entered into nation-state building efforts. In this study, the nation-state building efforts of the South Caucasus countries are discussed by considering both historical and international dynamics.
