ABSTRACT
The aim of this thesis is to examine the effects of carbon-based materials that can be used as solid lubricants to reduce the wear rate of materials exposed to abrasion. In accordance with this purpose, colloidal suspensions were prepared by adding graphite, carbon nanotube, and two different hydrothermal carbon solid lubricants into boron oil. To examine the concentration effect, each type of carbon was added at three different rates and a total of twelve suspensions were prepared. AlSi16 alloy, which is frequently exposed to abrasion in different application areas, was used as the substrate material in the wear tests. The tribological properties of this alloy were investigated at the end of the wear tests in the prepared suspensions, at room temperature, under 50 N applied load, and 3000 m sliding distance. The findings were discussed in detail with the wear mechanisms. According to these results, it has been determined that the wear rate decreases with the increasing concentration of the carbon additive, and especially the carbon additives with smaller particle morphology give better results. |
