19. YÜZYIL- 20. YÜZYIL EDİRNE VİLAYETİNDE BULUNAN GAYRİMÜSLİM VE YABANCI DEVLET OKULLARININ MİMARİ ANALİZİ

Abstract

ÖZET

Edirne Vilayeti, Cumhuriyet öncesi dönemde gayrimüslim nüfusun yoğun olarak yaşadığı bölgelerden biridir. Ayrıca vilayet genelinde bulunan konsolosluklar, ticari limanlar ve Şark Demiryolları inşaatı sebebiyle yabancı devletlere ait nüfus da oldukça yoğun bir şekilde ikamet etmektedir. 1856 yılında yayınlanan Islahat Fermanı ile gayrimüslimlere tanınan haklar, özellikle eğitim alanında oldukça etkili olmuş, bu dönemden sonra bir çok gayrimüslim okulu açılmıştır. Yabancı devletlerin Osmanlı Devleti sınırlarında okul açma girişimlerinde ise, ülkelere tanınan kapitülasyonlar ve misyonerlik faaliyetleri etkili olmuştur.

Edirne Vilayeti’nde, 19. ve 20. yüzyıllarda bir çok yeni gayrimüslim ve yabancı devlet okulu açılmıştır. Bu dönemde açılan ve günümüze ulaşabilen okulların bir kısmı özgün işleviyle kullanılmaya devam etmekte, bir kısmı ise farklı işlevlerle kullanılmaktadır. Okulların büyük bir bölümü ise günümüze ulaşamamıştır.

19. ve 20. yüzyıllarda Edirne Vilayeti’nde açılan ve günümüzde özgün işleviyle kullanılan gayrimüslim ve yabancı devlet okullarını konu alan bu çalışma, okullarının süreç içerisinde geçirdikleri değişimleri ele alarak mevcut durumlarını değerlendirmeyi ve bu dönemde açılan ancak günümüze ulaşamayan yapıları literatüre kazandırmayı amaçlamaktadır.

Vilayete bağlı sancaklarda açılan okullar, arşiv belgeleri ışığında derlenmektedir. Arşiv belgeleri ve literatür kaynaklarından edinilen elde edilen bulgular, yapılara ait geçmiş dönem fotoğraflarıyla, alan incelemeleriyle ve çizimlerle pekiştirilmektedir. Yapılarda zaman içerisinde ihtiyaçlar doğrultusunda yapılan değişiklikler detaylı şekilde ele alınmaktadır.

Yapılan incelemelerden elde edilen veriler doğrultusunda uygulanan müdahaleler; yapı kimliğine olan etkileri, yeni mekan ihtiyacı çözümleri ve yapıların sürdürülebilirlikleri açısından değerlendirilmektedir. Son olarak yapılar, aynı dönemde İstanbul ve Anadolu’da inşa edilen eğitim yapılarıyla plan tipleri ve cephe özellikleri bakımından karşılaştırılarak değerlendirilmektedir.

Değerlendirmeler sonucunda günümüzde özgün işleviyle kullanılan yapılara uygulanan müdahalelerin büyük bir kısmının, zorunlu ihtiyaçlar doğrultusunda yapılan ve geriye dönüşü mümkün kılan müdahaleler olduğu görülmektedir. Çalışma kapsamında incelenen okullar, aynı dönemde İstanbul ve Anadolu’da inşa edilen gayrimüslim ve yabancı devlet okullarıyla, plan tipi ve cephe özellikleri bakımından benzer özelliklere sahiptir.

ABSTRACT

Edirne Province is one of the regions where the non-Muslim population lived intensively in the pre-Republican period. In addition, due to the consulates, commercial ports and the construction of the Eastern Railways throughout the province, the population of foreign states resides in a very dense manner. The rights granted to non-Muslims with the Reform Edict published in 1856 were especially effective in the field of education, and many non-Muslim schools were opened after this period. In the attempts of foreign states to open schools within the borders of the Ottoman Empire, the caputilations and missionary activities granted to the countries were effective. Many new schools were opened throughout the Edirne Province in the 19th and 20th centuries.

In the Edirne province, many new non-Muslim and foreign public schools were opened in the 19th and 20th centuries. Some of the schools that were opened in this period and have survived to the present day are original and some continues to be used with different functions. Most of the schools have not survived to the present day.

Focusing on the 19th and 20th century non-Muslim and foreign public schools opened in the province of Edirne and used today with their original function, this study aims to evaluate the current situation of the schools by addressing the changes they have undergone in the process and to bring the buildings that were opened in this period but have not survived to the present day to the literature.

The schools opened in the sanjaks of the province are compiled in the light of archival documents. The findings obtained from archival documents and literature sources are reinforced with photographs of the buildings from the past, field surveys and drawings. The changes made to the buildings over time in line with the needs are discussed in detail.

In line with the data obtained from the examinations, the interventions are evaluated in terms of their effects on the building identity, new space requirement solutions and the sustainability of the buildings. Finally, the buildings are evaluated by comparing them with educational buildings built in Istanbul and Anatolia in the same period in terms of plan types and façade features.

As a result of the evaluations, it is seen that most of the interventions applied to the buildings that are used today with their original function are interventions made in line with compulsory needs and that make it possible to return. The schools examined in the scope of the study have similar characteristics in terms of plan type and façade features with non-Muslim and foreign public schools built in Istanbul and Anatolia in the same period.
