Abstract:
ABSTRACT
This study, conducted with the aim of determining the experiences of emergency department nurses caring for multitraumatized patients, used a phenomenological approach, one of the qualitative research methods. Seventeen nurses working in the emergency department of a training and research hospital in Karabuk were included in the study. The criterion sampling method was used to select participants, which is one of the purposive sampling methods. The data of the study were collected using the Personal Information Form" and the Semi-structured Focus Group Interview", which includes the socio-demographic characteristics of the nurses. Qualitative research methods were used in this study. The phenomenological approach was chosen as the research design. Participants were divided into 5 groups (4-4-3-3 people) according to their appointments. The data obtained during the study were analyzed using the Nvivo program for qualitative data analysis. It was found that 8 of the nurses participating in the study were between 36and 45 years old, 11 of them were women, and 12 of them had completed a college degree. In relation to the experiences of emergency paramedics caring for multitraumatic patients, six main themes were created: "human and robotic emotions, connectedness to life, problems during the intervention, definition of pain, management attitude, and expectations". Consistent with the research findings, it is recommended that nurses intervening in the ED for multitraumatic patients should be separated and that at least one experienced multitraumatic nurse should be present in the ED on each shift, that continuing education plans for multitraumatic patients should be established, and that training should be practical rather than theoretical.
