ABSTRACT
In this study, AISI 304 stainless steel materials were joined using laser welding. Laser welding is an advanced welding method compared to other conventional welding techniques, due to its ability to easily direct the laser beam and deliver a high amount of energy to small and narrow areas. After the welding process, three different sample groups were created. The first group remained untreated after welding and was used as a reference sample. The second sample group underwent cryogenic treatment for 12 and 24 hours. The third sample group underwent cryogenic treatment for 12 and 24 hours, followed by tempering.
To observe the effects of cryogenic treatment and tempering, the microstructures and mechanical properties (yield and tensile strength, toughness, and micro-hardness) of the materials after welding were examined. In laser welding, the rapid formation of a
welding pool by the laser in a very short time and a very narrow area caused microstructure changes to occur in a confined region. Although the microstructure of 304 stainless steel consists of the austenite phase, the effect of rapid cooling in the welding zone resulted in the presence of the martensite phase.
The highest hardness value in the welding zone was obtained from the sample that underwent cryogenic treatment at -140°C for 24 hours, followed by tempering at 140°C for 12 hours. The highest tensile strength was also achieved in the same sample, except for the reference sample. The findings indicate that the sequential application of cryogenic treatment and tempering after the welding process improved the mechanical properties.
