ABSTRACT
In this study, an aerial surveillance system was developed using deep learning networks for the early detection of forest fires. This system encompasses an unmanned aerial vehicle and a ground station application developed for visualizing data transmitted during flight. The performance of YOLOv8 and YOLOv5 in detecting forest fires was examined, and a CNN-RCNN network was designed to classify whether the images contained fires or not, with the results compared to the YOLOv8 network's classification. The NVIDIA Jetson Nano was integrated into the unmanned aerial vehicle to enable real-time analysis of these deep learning networks. Additionally, a ground station software developed within the scope of this study was used to receive and display data related to fires. This program displays images and coordinates of the detected fire area. For performance evaluation of the detection methods, the classification effectiveness of the CNN-RCNN network was subjected
to a comparative assessment with the results obtained by the YOLOv8 model. Experimental results demonstrated a high degree of accuracy across various detection methods, with 96% for the CNN-RCNN network, 96% for YOLOv8-based
classification, 89% for YOLOv5-based object detection, and 89% for YOLOv8-based object detection. Overall, this research contributes to the application of deep learning technologies for the early detection of forest fires, offering a comprehensive system that could mitigate the destructive effects of such natural disasters. |
