In this study, a microwave-assisted impregnation process was developed to ensure adequate uptake and fixation of Alkaline copper quat (ACQ) in Eastern spruce [Picea orientalis (L.) Link]. In the first stage, wood samples with 40-50% moisture content were exposed to microwave pre-treatment at 3 different energy densities to improve preservative uptake. In the second stage, the samples were impregnated by vacuum method using 2% ACQ solution. In the third stage, microwave post-treatment at two different energy densities was applied to improve the fixation of ACQ and air-dried post-treatment was applied as a control group. Then, the synergistic effects of microwave-assisted impregnation treatments on the compressive strength parallel to the grain, leaching resistance, copper conversion and decay resistance of wood were investigated. In addition, the changes in micro and chemical structure caused by microwave assisted impregnation processes were evaluated by SEM and FTIR analyses. As a result, all three of the energy densities (355, 1064, 1387 MJ/m3) applied in microwave pre-treatment of spruce were sufficient to reach the required retention amount of 6.4 kg/m3 in preservative uptake for outdoor applications without causing a significant decrease in compressive strength parallel to the grain. Depending on the increase in the energy density applied in the microwave pre-treatment, the penetration depth, fixation, leaching resistance and thus decay resistance of ACQ in the impregnated wood increased. In the microwave-assisted impregnation process combined with microwave pre-treatment and post-treatment, the post-treatment did not affect the uptake and penetration depth of ACQ in the wood, but increased its fixation in the wood, improved the leaching resistance of the wood and increased the decay resistance. In the present thesis, optimum results in terms of penetration depth, fixation to wood, leaching resistance and decay resistance of ACQ uptake were achieved by microwave assisted impregnation combined with high intensity pre-treatment and low intensity post-treatment.
