A case study on the socio-economic status of the musicians playing at the wedding, an important element in the sociology of music in Türkiye, and the effect of the pandemic: The case of Safranbolu

Bu araştırma pandemi döneminde Safranbolu ilçesinde düğünde çalan müzisyenlerin, sosyo ekonomik This research aimed to determine the opinions of the musicians who played at the wedding in the Safranbolu district of Karabük province during the pandemic period, regarding their socio-economic status and the effect of the pandemic on this. Safranbolu is an important region in terms of researching the wedding and related subjects, which is one of the Turkish folkloric elements, and has been selected as a world heritage site to be protected by UNESCO. The research was carried out according to the case study method, one of the qualitative research methods. The phenomenological approach can also be among the methods of the research in terms of aiming to describe the experiences in an objective way. Some criteria were determined for the selection of the participants in the study. These; participants are musicians playing at the wedding and have rich experience and knowledge content. The musicians who played at five weddings meeting these criteria were determined as participants. The first researcher works at Karabuk University and is very close to Safranbolu district, where the data were collected. Sampling methods used in the research; Criterion sampling in terms of obtaining rich and in-depth data and searching for certain criteria in the participants, convenience sampling in terms of choosing Safranbolu in collecting data easily and economically, and purposeful sampling method in determining the participant group that will serve the purposes of the research. In the analysis of the data, themes and sub-themes were created by using the content analysis method. Content analyzes are presented in tables with themes and sub-themes and direct quotations. Looking at the research findings, it is seen that they are grouped under four themes. Income Status theme; It consists of sub-themes such as providing sufficient income, needing additional work, negative effect of the pandemic, monthly income of 10-15 thousand TL, monthly income of 5-10 thousand TL. The theme of Practicing Another Profession; It consists of sub-themes of being a worker in a factory, being a tradesman, being able to make a living alone. The theme of Reasons for Executing Another Occupation; seasonality, factors such as pandemic, increase in the number of employees and competition, social security need consists of sub-themes. Pandemic Period Problems theme; It consists of sub-themes of not being able to do the job, having to return to the main job, not seeing enough value in social art (work), insufficient support of the state. As a result, it can be said that the musicians playing at the wedding in Safranbolu considered their income levels sufficient before the pandemic period. However, many of them also practice different professions. The reason for this is that the musicianship played at the wedding is seasonal. The musicians playing at the wedding have opinions about their demands for social security and increasing state support. Conducting this research during the pandemic period may be a period when the socio-economic problems of the musicians playing at the wedding become evident. It can be suggested that these problems be investigated in more detail and at an individual level, with qualitative and quantitative research techniques after the pandemic. Comparative research on the situation of musicians playing at weddings in different regions of Turkey; It can provide more objective findings for practitioners and social policy makers. © 2022, Fikri Soysal.
