Özet
Mass emergencies are social and political events that cause significant disruption in the functioning of society and lead to losses at various levels. The causes and consequences of such events are significantly related to the inequalities that exist in the system. Racism, which is one of the main roots of inequality, may even be the cause of the disaster in some cases, and plays a role as one of the biggest obstacles in ensuring that post-disaster response programs take into account the needs of different parts of society. Racist discourses, which are the most obvious manifestations of systemic racism in emergencies, may even lead to the blaming of those affected by these extraordinary events. In light of all this, studies on mass emergencies need to take into account social and political factors. In this respect, some recommendations in line with the systemic perspective that should be adopted in studies on such events are given at the end of the article. © 2024, Turkish Medical Association.
