Özet
Concepts such as culture, civilization and modernization have aroused the attention of Turkish intelligensia since the end of the 19th century. Those concepts were sometimes directly taken from the West or their definition were reinterpreted by comparison with the local elements. Westernization efforts intensely continued following the establishment of the Republic of Turkey. This study aims to probe the emergence of the new perception of culture and civilization in the new state by presenting the ideas of Ataturk, in comparison to the ideas of the other intellectuals such as Ziya Gokalp.
