This research was aimed to determine the prevalence, severity and quality of life of constipation in healthy university students and to examine the effect of abdominal massage on the constipation severity, constipation quality of life, frequency and duration of defecation. This descriptive, analytical and experimental research was conducted between April 3-22, 2019, after obtaining the necessary permissions. The descriptive phase of the study was carried out with 293 students in the nursing department (N = 443). Constipation severity scores of 89 students were determined to be high. For the experimental phase, all volunteer students (n = 41) who met the inclusion criteria with the thought of possible loss of subjects were randomly assigned to two groups and completed with 36 students. The case group applied abdominal massage on their own. The data of the study were collected using student information and follow-up form, constipation severity scale, and constipation quality of life scale before and after the application on the 5th, 10th and 20th days. While evaluating the data, number, percentage, mean, standard deviation, Chi-square, Mann Whitney U and Independent Sample t and Friedman tests were used. In the descriptive part of the study, the severity of constipation was found to be significantly higher in female students (p <0.05). As a result of the experimental section, which is the second phase of the study, it was determined that abdominal massage applied to young university students who had constipation problems positively affected the constipation severity (p <0.05), and it could increase the constipation quality of life of young people in long-term practice (p <0.05). No difference was found in terms of defecation time (p> 0.05), however, it was determined that the number of defecations increased as the application continued in the case group (p <0.05)."
