Özet
Paphlagonian Hadrianopolis is located within the borders of today's Eskipazar district of Karabuk province. The centre of the city lies in a valley formed by the Eskipazar Stream, which gives life to Eskipazar. The traces of the city, which spread over a large area, can be found in the villages of Budaklar, Buyukyayalar, Cayli, Kabaarmut, Beytarla, Hamzalar and Hasli, and in the Hacahmatlar and Eleler neighbourhoods. As a result of rescue and scientific excavations undertaken previously in Hadrianopolis, extremely important structures were discovered and important data about the history of the city were obtained. No architectural buildings from the Roman Imperial period have been reached so far. Evidence on the city in the Roman period can only be obtained from inscriptions and rock-cut tombs. Illegal excavation of tombs in the city led to the disappearance of contextual finds and made it difficult to date the tombs. To combat this, excavation started in 2018 in the Southern Necropolis of Hadrianopolis, located on a rocky area called Balkayasi which is to the south of 'Four Rivers Church'. Various types of grave can be seen in this rocky area, which has a calcareous texture. During excavations it was detected that many tombs had been destroyed by looters. Important evidence from the necropolis is that the area was used continuously during the Roman and Byzantine periods. Tombs of these two period show different characteristics in terms of type and elevation. Finds discovered in tombs, thought to belong to the Roman period, may be useful in dating certain types of Roman tomb more clearly. In this study, new data obtained from Hadrianopolis from the Roman period will be shared and discussed. © Archaeopress and the individual authors 2023. All rights reserved.
