Öğe A Comparative Study on Microstructure Properties of AZ91 Magnesium Alloy with Silicon Addition Using Ceramic Mold(Polish Acad Sciences Inst Physics, 2019) Goren, H. A.; Unal, M.; Koc, E.In this study, comparatively microstructure and hardness properties of AZ91 alloy with the addition of 1.95 wt% silicon were investigated by using ceramic mold. For this purpose, the alloys were provided to solidfy in different rates due to using that mold. Alloys cast into this mold showed rapid cooling behavior due to copper in the base, while cooling rate decreased on the top zone. The results showed that alpha+Mg main matrix phase is present in AZ91 structure, Mg-Al eutectic and Mg17Al12 intermetallic phases extending along grain boundaries were observed in the main matrix as well. As the cooling rate increases, the grain boundaries of Mg17Al12 intermetallic phases were increased. The Mg17Al12 phase at grain boundaries was partially fragmented with the addition of Si. Coarsen Mg2Si phases were also formed with the addition of 1.95 wt% silicon. The hardness values were increased with the increasing of cooling rate and the addition of silicon.Öğe Effects of 1WT.% Ti, In, and Sn Additions on the Microstructure, Mechanical and Corrosion Properties of the As-Cast and Hot-Rolled AM60 Magnesium Alloys(Springer, 2019) Turen, Y. U.; Zengin, H.; Sun, Ya.; Ahlatci, H.; Unal, M.We study the influence of 1 wt.% Ti, In and Sn additions on the microstructure, mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of the as-cast and hot-rolled AM60 magnesium alloys. The analysis of microstructure was performed by using optical and scanning electron microscopes The phase composition of the alloys and grain sizes are analyzed. We also determine the ultimate strength, yield limit, relative elongation, and corrosion resistance of the alloys. The efficiency of alloying of AM60 alloy with titanium and tin (for the improvement of the mechanical characteristics) and with indium (for the improvement of corrosion resistance) is demonstrated.Öğe Effects of solidification rate and Sb additions on microstructure and mechanical properties of as cast AM60 magnesium alloys(Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2014) Unal, M.In this study, effects of solidification rate and 0.2, 0.5 and 1.0 wt-% Sb additions on the microstructure and mechanical properties of AM60 magnesium alloy were investigated. AM60 and AM60+xSb magnesium alloys were cast in a step-like mould with three different cooling rates. As cast microstructures of the different steps were examined with optical microscope, XRD, SEM and EDS. The results showed that grain structure became finer as the cooling rate increased which resulted in enhancement in the mechanical properties. Tensile and yield strengths reached the peak values as Sb content was 0.2% which yielded 30 and 28% higher strengths respectively as compared to the base AM60 alloy.Öğe Effects of titanium addition on mechanical and corrosion behaviours of AZ91 magnesium alloy(Elsevier Science Sa, 2011) Candan, S.; Unal, M.; Koc, E.; Turen, Y.; Candan, E.The mechanical properties and corrosion behaviour of AZ91 magnesium alloy containing 0.2-0.5 wt.% Ti were investigated in this study. Results demonstrate that the enhancement of the ultimate tensile strength by 18% and yield strength by 47% can be achieved by Ti addition. The corrosion behaviour was evaluated by immersion tests and potentiodynamic polarisation measurements in 3.5% NaCl solution. The results from the immersion tests and potentiodynamic polarisation measurements showed that the corrosion resistance of AZ91 alloy increased progressively with the increase of the Ti content of the alloy. Compared to AZ91 alloy, 0.5Ti addition increased the corrosion resistance by up to 45 fold. The mechanism of property enhancement is ascribed to both the suppression of partially divorced beta-Mg17Al12 eutectics and an increased Al content in alpha-Mg solid solution by Ti addition in AZ91 alloy. An enhancement of ultimate tensile strength by 42%, yield strength by 58% and elongation by 20% can be achieved by Pb addition. Corrosion resistance of the AZ91 alloy also increased progressively with increasing Pb content. The mechanism of property enhancement is ascribed to the suppression of intermetallic phases (beta-Mg17Al12 and alpha-Mg+beta eutectic) by Pb addition. (c) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
