Özet

This study was carried out to determine the effect of Geographic Information Systems towards the students' success at secondary education geography teaching. It was suggested that students' interest and success levels may increase by reflecting the effects of developing technologies over social life into classroom atmosphere. 46 students at an Anatolian High School dependent to Ministry of Education (Class 2) were included in the research. Pretestposttest experimental design with controll group was used as the design of the research. In one of the groups the determined theme was taught via GIS and in the other group the same theme was taught using traditional methods and techniques during the application. The success test of plate movements and earthquakes theme was used as data gathering tool and applied as pre and post tests to the groups. The analysis of the gathered data was done by SPSS 15.0 programme. According to the findings the group application with traditional method and techniques increased the success level up to 13,02 %, the group application with GIS students' success increased up to 38,86 %. In the frame of these data it is thought that the usage of GIS in our country as well as the developed countries will incline and support the students' success.
