Öğe Application of exploratory spatial techniques in the identification of tourism hotspots in the aegean region of Turkey(International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing, 2020) Rafique, A.; Karas, I.R.; Abujayyab, S.K.M.; Khan, A.A.; Demiral, E.Exploratory Spatial Analysis Techniques (ESDA) have become popular to identify the spatial association of different variables in many fields of natural and social sciences. The application of Global Moran's I statistics enables us to provide visual insights of spatial data. It helps to detect spatial patterns and hotspots of an activity or process, based on spatial autocorrelation. This study aims to investigate the spatial dependence of domestic and inbound tourist arrivals to 123 cities of all eight provinces of the Aegean Region of Turkey. For analysis, city-level data about domestic and inbound tourist arrivals during 2015-2019 is collected from the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism and is converted to logarithm form to avoid any skewness. The Arc GIS and GeoDa programs are employed for the analysis of spatial autocorrelation and visualization of hotspots of tourist flows in the regions. The results of the study reveal that tourist flows in the region are concentrated in the coastal areas, while inland cities receive an insufficient number of tourists. The hotspots of tourist flow are located mostly in the coastal towns of the provinces of Izmir, Aydin, and Mugla. The study is significant in the provision of useful information regarding resource allocation to the tourism hotspots and the implication of sustainable tourism policy to better utilization of tourism potential. © 2020 International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing. A research hypothesis was also established according to which, the influence of Europeanization in the Russian-Soviet version, may influence greater knowledge about Poland. The work uses the classic method of survey research in the social sciences with the use of a standardized questionnaire. The study involved students of tourism and geography from universities in Astana (35), Bishkek (32) and Karabük (43). The results of the research allow us to define the awareness of Poland as a tourist brand as moderately good in Astana, weaker in Bishkek, and poor in Karabük. The largest number of correct answers concerned the capital of Poland and well-known Poles (Copernicus, John Paul II, Chopin), and among athletes, footballers (Lewandowski) and ski jumpers (Stoch, Ma?ysz). The fewest correct answers concerned Poland’s tourist attractions. In the perception of the students participating in the study, Poland is one of the countries of Central Europe that are attractive in terms of tourism. It can also be concluded that the influence of the heritage of Russian Europeanization on students’ knowledge of Europe is still visible. © 2023 Editura Universitatii din Oradea. Present research is sought to analyse the spatial association and distribution of foreign and domestic tourist inflows in 81 provinces of Turkey through exploratory spatial data analysis (ESDA) technique. ESDA is one of very useful Geographic Information System (GIS) based spatial statistics techniques to analyse spatial patterns, identification of hotspots and visualization of spatial association among variables. Analysis of global Moran’s I statistics results into a positive value that indicates presence of spatial autocorrelation among neighbouring provinces with high(low) number of both foreign and domestic tourist arrivals during years 2000-2016. This depicts positive and negative autocorrelation of places with geographical similarities and dissimilarities over the space. Moreover, Moran’s significance maps help indicating hotspot areas of high and low tourist arrivals where high clusters are found in western coastal areas and lower clusters are associated to eastern inland areas. Furthermore, Moran’s scatterplot analysis highlights the regional disparities within the country in terms of tourism development. This polarized spatial pattern of tourism is associated with differences in economic development and resource allocation between western and eastern provinces. This study is significant for policy makers by providing insights into spatial distribution of tourist flows for better resource allocation and management of hotspot areas. Besides, it also helps private sector and tour operators for economic utilization of tourist clusters and hotspots. © 2018 Varna University of Management. All rights reserved.
