dc.description.abstract | In pocket milling operations, which they are often encountered in plastic mould manufacture, narrowing the gap as far as possible between the surface roughness values obtained at finish milling and the surface roughness values met by further finishing operations is in demand. Selection of cutting speed, feed rate, depth of cut and step over values with appropriate cutter path strategies are all important variables which define cutting time and surface texture. The effects of every single variable on surface roughness are known, but results revealed in their combinations cannot be clearly estimated. In the experimental study conducted, surface roughness variations under different cutter path strategies and cutting parameters in pocket milling have been investigated. In finish milling one direction, back and forth and spiral cutter path strategies have been employed. Four different levels for cutting speed, feed rate, depth of cut and step over values have been determined and design of experiment has been conducted by Taguchi orthogonal array. The experiments are done on commonly used IMPAX EN/DIN 1.2738 mould material with four flutes HSSE end mills. ANOVA tables have been compiled with average surface roughness values obtained from the experiments. The effects of related parameters on surface roughness have been determined for each cutter paths. The ideal cutter path strategy under the conditions considered in pocket milling has been found out as spiral. | en_US |
