In vitro degradation behaviour of beta phase (Mg17Al12), commonly present in AZ series magnesium alloys, was studied using electrochemical techniques in simulated body fluid. The experimental results suggested that the degradation rate of beta phase was significantly lower than that of pure magnesium. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis of the polarized beta phase revealed localized corrosion. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.en_US
