dc.description.abstract | Iran, which has a deep-rooted civilization, is a country that has been ruled as an Islamic Republic since the 1979 revolution. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is Iran’s Supreme Leader and the current President of Iran is Hassan Rouhani. Health services in Iran are provided by the public sector, private sector and non-governmental organizations. Within the scope of the reforms that have been going on since the 1990s, the Health Transformation Program started to be implemented in 2014. The first COVID-19 cases confirmed by official authorities in Iran emerged in the city of Kum on February 19, 2020. 31 provinces of Iran were infected by the novel coronavirus within two weeks. As of 31 May 2021, the total number of COVID-19 cases is 2.902.094 and the total number of deaths is 79.939, the fatality rate is 2.8%. The troubles associated with the COVID-19 epidemic have increased due to Iran’s deep economic problems as well as severe US sanctions. The main difficulties faced by the health system during the epidemic process is the shortage of protective equipment, medicine and medical supplies. From the start of the COVID-19 epidemic in Iran until August 22, the number of healthcare workers infected with the virus is 12.000, and the number of healthcare workers who died is 164. It is reported that the number of healthcare workers who died from the beginning of the epidemic until the first months of 2021 is at least 533. © 2021, Turkish Medical Association.
