Özet
This research was conducted to examine the views of the geography teachers about the role of the individual in the training of the individual. In the study, the phenomenological design is used in the qualitative research method. 16 geographical teachers working in Karabuk secondary education institutions participated in the research. The interview form developed by the researchers was used as data collection tool. In the analysis of the data, content analysis method was used. The views of the participating geographical teachers were divided into six dimensions (the role of geography education in raising an individual, the relationship between country recognition and homeland love, contribution to identity development, impact on active citizenship, skills and values). As a result of the study, geography teachers stated that geography education is effective in giving the individuals the skills of daily life. In addition, geography teachers think that geography education will contribute to the development of identity and individuals' identity by increasing the love of motherland and nation in the individuals, by knowing the place and country where they live. Moreover, in research findings, geography teachers have reached the conclusion that they cannot make the skills and values effective for the students because of the intensity of the curriculum and the lack of lesson hours. Based on the results of the research, it is suggested that students' opinions about the subject should be taken with the geography teachers working in different fields.
